Freeway and Jake One are back

I am a New Yorker (via New Jersey) at heart, but Philly will forever be my second home. I can't lie, I just feel the vibe of the town: grimey, yet smooth. With that being said, one of my favorite MCs, Freeway, is coming back with the follow up to his excellent 2010 LP The Stimulus Package (Co-Staring producer Jake-One), Beautiful Music . Check out the visual:
Freeway's Diamond in the Rough LP is coming soon on Rhymesayers Records.

Kanye West- Paranoid
Continuing in his attempts to create images for every song on 808s and Heartbreaks, Fishstick fanatic Kanye West dropped this new video for Paranoid:
First off, yes, that is Rihanna as the featured girl in this video. And yes she looks absolutely amazing. Kind of ironic that she's featured in a song about Paranoid women, when she is on record as being... a paranoid woman. Oh irony, how comical.
Great video and great song, 'nuff said.

Hot song... Video: Not So Much
Rick Ross- Rich Off Cocaine
Man, oh man, Rick Ross is having a great year. Dropped probably the best album of the year so far, Deeper Than Rap, beefed with rap's biggest bully... and won, and survived a tell all big from his angry baby momma. Sticking to the music (because in the end, thats what really matters), this is definately my favorite song on the album. Too bad this video looks like it was made on iMovie in about 20 minutes.
Regardless of the video, or of the validity of Ross' claim to be a cocaine dealer, check out the album if you have yet to do so. Its really a great hip hop album.

Money Making Marathon!
The hottest record in the streets (or so I'm told) finally has a video. Check out OJ the Juiceman and Gucci Mane staring in Make the Trap AYE
OJ the Juiceman is probably the most horribly enjoyable rappers since the likes of B.G., Project Pat or Tone Loc. I can't lie, I love this track, and the video is... pretty standard trap material.

Soulja boy + Gucci Mane = Classic Material
Soulja Boy- Gucci Bandanna f/ Shawty Lo & Gucci Mane
This song has been out for a while, but the video just dropped earlier this week. Come on, you know I'm digging this... Gucci, Shawty and Soulja. This is awesome with a capital AYE!!!!!
...Seriously though, what in the world is that "Everybody get your roll on dance" going on in the backdrop of the video? This is NOT a Big Timer's video!! Smh... anyway, silly video to go with a silly song.

Ciara owes all of her success to ME!!!

Former "Worst of 09" Nominee Ciara has really made a nice little turn around after releasing that half-assed attempt at a love anthem earlier this year (see "Never Ever" post)
After hearing that monstrosity, I was ready to put the Atlanta-bred beauty on the shelf for life. But I was mistaken. Ciara is back and her music doesn't suck as bad as before. I'm sure you've all heard this joint on every pop station in the country...
Shout to Justin Timberlake for continuing to reinvent himself as the second most gangster R&B singer alive (trailing only the notorious Chris Brown). As much as I want to, I can't really hate on this song too much. Its catchy, its got a hot video, and its waaaaaaay better than "Never Ever".
Check out some heat from Ciara:
Ciara- G is for Girl

Ciara's new album drops later this quarter... I'm sure it won't be that great, but hey, thats an upgrade from me thinking it would be the worst thing to happen to R&B since the Omarion & Bow Wow Best of Both Worlds project...

Milk Carton Monday-- Fabo!

The self proclaimed King of Snap had everyone and their mamma leaning and rocking back in 2005 when he hit the scene with Atlanta group D4L for their gold debut "Down For Life".
Bet You Can't Do It Like Me (D4L)
With hit singles "Laffy Taffy" and "I'm Da Man", Fabo felt he could do no wrong. Little did he know going solo and dissing former boss Shawty Lo probably weren't the best moves for an non-skilled rapper looking for anything resembling a long career.
Fabo's wild and unpredictable (insert drug induced) antics grew stale quickly and his "rap" career fizzled out before it could start. However, before fading away completely, he left us with some absolutely gems on Youtube. Please be cautioned, these videos are about as pointless and ignorant as they come
Freestyle w/ Chamillionaire and Jibbs (two future Milk Carton alumni...)
Tattoo w/ The Alliance (Milk Carton Monday Class of 2010)
Fabo was last seen "geeked up" in an Atlanta night club singing and ad libing in a corner by himself... seriously.
Milk Carton Monday... laughing at and judging mediocre hype men / wanna-be-rappers, one Monday at a time

New Atmosphere

Slug and Ant are back out with a crazy new video. Check out Atmosphere's new video, "Your Glass House"
Looks like shawty had one too many drinks... this song is pretty much "Blame It" Part II. I think its funny how the girl was actually in her own house the entire time... poor girl.
If you're feeling this, check out Atmosphere's album "When Life gives you lemons.."

My Favorite White Girl
...So Hard to choose just one, but I love me some Lily Allen. Check out her new video, "Not Fair"
The director did a great job with the 70s/ Sonny and Cher theme of the video. To be honest, she's not the best looking girl in the world, but that accent really does it for me. H've at it gov'nor. Ya'll feeling this one??

Salute the Kings
Its impossible to be a fan of southern rap tunes and not have a specially place in your heart for Bun B and Pimp C, better know collectively as UGK. Unfortunately, we lost Pimp C last year to his addiction to Codeine, however, Bun B was able to put together a nice body of work featuring him and Pimp riding dirty one last time.

UGK for Life drops tomorrow, please go out and support the original kings of the south. Check out the first single "Da Game's been good to me"

Milk Carton Monday-- David Banner
Ever have that kid in your school who swore he was harder than granite and gansta as hell, yet was a serious college student. In that same regard, did you have that kid in your college that was high and mighty and preaching about living righteous during the day, yet give him a drink and he became more militant than Malcolm X? Well, combine these two characters together and you have this week's missing rapper, David Banner.

David Banner had a buzz, and then it died when he released his first album. He came back with a monster joint called "Get Like Me" f/ Chris Brown and Yung Joc, caught a buzz... then subsequently faded away.
I think the thing that killed David Banner's career, besides doing songs with Chris Brown, was the fact that Banner's persona was just too all over the place. Fans just didn't know what to think of him. Was he the introspective rapper who wasn't afraid to tackle social issues like police brutality and voter rights...
So Long
...or was he just another low-rent southern rapper rhyming about Chevy's, syrup and general things that just don't really matter?
To be honest I still don't know...
Banner was last seen at a college lecture series smoking a blunt, criticising gang bangers, all while getting a lap dance and tipping strippers... If you see him, slap him in the face. He won't care...
DaTurnpike.com, just as confused as you are about semi-conscious rappers, and talking about them, one monday at a time.

88 Keys- Stay Up! (Viagra) f/ Kanye West
Great song, with an even better video... one big problem: THIS SONG IS DAMN NEAR 2 YEARS OLD!!
I first heard this on Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing" mixtape back in the summer of 2007. Oh well, still a hot song. Love me a hot blond... haha.
Go pick up that 88 Keys album, its great. Real talk.

Hottest R&B Remix in a Minute
The Dream f/ Fabolous, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled (smh), and Ludacris - Rockin that Sh*t (all star remix)
Song is a problem! Visually, the art style of the video is crazy. The magazine layouts coupled with the lyrics is amazing.
If you didn't know, and I didn't until the other day, The Dream's album "Love Vs. Money" is out now. Please go out and support. Not as good as the first album, but still a banger. If you put that on with a lady friend and you can't get it poppin, you're an absolute lame... or you been friend zoned.
Btw, I'm gonna throw this out there, the Dream is better than Ne-Yo in every regard. What do you think??

Harlem strikes again
As usual, I was surfing the web and watching MTV2 and I kept coming across this new video from Jim Jones, and to be honest, the video has effectively polarized me. Check out "Na Na Nana"
So many emotions to cover on this one. First off, the video is effectively simplistic. I think they learned that no one wants to see Jim Jones and Juelz Santana spray themselves with champaign.
The song is actually pretty solid lyrically. Jones does his typically braggadocios thing, coupled with silly ad-libs and a tight, yet minimal beat.
Enough praise, onto what my hater side is thinking. Jones isn't really rapping about anything in particular through out the whole song, and it becomes painfully obvious by the third verse. Speaking of painful sonic combinations, this could be one of the most annoying hooks I have ever heard. Filling 4 bars with the sounds a little girl makes is hardly creative, and whoever the girl on the hook is, she needs to either grow up or be shot.
But honestly, beyond my hate of certain elements of this song, I actually enjoy this track/video as a whole. Jones just does what he does, and I actually respect him for it. It does not feel as forced as some of his earlier records. I would compare this song to "Summer in Miami", an undeniably stupid, yet hot, record.
Jones, well done... I guess.

How to Break Writer's Block
So I've been off the radar for a minute, but i'm back ready to deliver fresh daily content. I wanna thank one person for breaking me out my blogging funk...

YEAAAAAAAAAAA!
Say what you will about Gucci Mane, but he's constantly coming out with new material. He doesn't let things like incarceration, drug problems, or a lack of Chap Stick stop him from sending his trappin message to world. In that regard, Gucci has re-energized me to create the freshest and most interesting music/culture blog on the internet.
Enough of my soliloquy, enjoy some new trap classics:
Gucci Mane f/ Esther Dean - Whyte Girl
Gucci Mane- Stoopid
I'M BAAAAACK!

Prom Queen Video
Lil Wayne- Prom Queen
I guess Wayne was serious with this whole rock star thing. This video reminds me of something you would see from Sum 41, or Blink 182 back in the haydays of TRL. Shamefully, I really like this song and I am looking forward to hearing Wayne's rock album "Rebirth" whenever it drops.
Feelin' this???
