This Saturday is ~~an excuse for women to dress sluty~~ Halloween. What a great opportunity to turn the clock back to rage-o-clock and party your ass off. Personally, I hate parties at place like clubs and other uber-cool spots that I-banker douchebags and bridge-and-tunnel trash flock to. I'd much prefer to frat-it-up at a house party or an exclusive event. Speaking of exclusive spots, I'm teaming up with the good folks over at The Tasty Beat to throw the most bitchin Halloween party of all time. Its gonna be... scary good!

Its all going down in Brooklyn at The Garden in Williamsburg.

The spot is amazing, it’s a beautiful garden behind an antique store, set up for parties. There’s also an indoor gallery space, where we’ll party if it gets a little too cold out there. There’ll be beers and cocktails, live DJs spinning the hottest hip hop, dubstep, pop, and Miley Cyrus, as well as $2 burgers and Halloween treats.

Make sure to bring your costumes, some treats, and your appetite for rage.

8-Bit Music Videos FTW

As a 24 year old, I'm just old enough to remember rocking out to games like Double Dragon and Mega Man on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Those games kicked major 8-bit ass. Funny thing is, the set up for every game was the same, but who cared?! ? Every game consisted of a pixelated protagonist kicking ass with his fist or some random projectile from left to right for 5-10 hours of awesomeness.

This set up is so money that it even works for music videos, imagine that.

The origins of the Foreign Exchange

For the most part, I hate contemporary R&B. I can't deal with the club-anthems of Trey Songz, I can't stomach the woe-is-me whining from Fantasia, and please don't get me started on Beyonce's foolishness.

While I find the genre to be a bit vapid, there are some acts I constantly check for. One of those acts, The Foreign Exchange, has just released their 3rd studio LP, Authenticity .

For those that don't know, the Foreign Exchange consists of Phonte Coleman of Little Brother, and Producer Nicolay, from the Netherlands. To promote the release of their album, the duo released a series of videos to talk about the development of each of their projects.

The first of the series discusses how the two crafted their first album without even meeting in person. The albums was crafted and complied through collaboration via the Internet and emails. Pretty amazing for how good the album was. Check it out:

The machine finally got me

I'll be one hundred percent on this, I've hated the last few G-Unit albums. In fact, the last G-Unit release I liked was Beg For Mercy.

As whole, their releases have felt dated, over commercialized, and, for lack of a better word, wack as hell... Which is mostly due to their ever changing roster, and the cultural irrelevance of 50 Cent.

With that being said, I am VERY excited for this new Lloyd Banks album. Granted, my excitement is probably due to the fact that Kanye has co-signed Banks' lyrical ability ~~and made people forget that Banks a poor man's Fabolous~~... But that's neither here nor there.

Drink the kool-aid with me, and check out Bank's latest track, featuring Kanye, Fabolous, and Ryan Leslie.

As a fan of Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa, Devin the Dude and a host of many other stoner MCs, I was instantly curious about Smoke DZAs mixtape George Kush the Button . If you haven't heard the tape, PLEASE check it out HERE.

I was pleased to discover that DZA is re-releasing the mixtape with additional tracks, and more funny interludes about things that tend to happen at 4:20 in the afternoon. Here is one of the new tracks, Crazy Glue, featuring Cory Gunz and Big Saint. Big KRIT on the track, by the way.

An upstart Indie Rock band from here in New York City. I've seen them perform at the Delancy a while ago and they're pretty amazing. Their sound is very electronic, yet clean and bluesy.

What other band do you know with a violinist? Yea, I thought so, NONE!

Das Racists - Combination Pizza Hut Taco Bell

If that doesn't draw you in, I don't know what will.

Meet Das Racists, two Wesleyan University graduates who eloquently describe their music as "dance music, that doesn't talk about dancey things"... more like dance music, that doesn't talk about anything, guys.

Honestly, I have NO reservations in saying that I throughly enjoy their music. I know they really are not saying... well, anything at all (and definitely nothing dancey, right guys?) . But part of hip-hop is just trying new things and having fun with it, and there's no denying that these two wacky bastards are having a ball with their music. It also doesn't hurt that they are blessed with beats from greats like Dame Grease, Boi 1da (of Young Money fame), and the one and only Diplo. I haven't seen this extreme of a case of musical luck-and-pluck since the last Gucci Mane project (BURR!).

People, meet Earl Stevens Jr. aka Droop E, you may know his father, Earl Stevens Sr... better known as, E-40. The aire apparent to the Bay Area throne recently released a Sade inspired mixtape. First off, yes, that is Rihanna as the featured girl in this video. And yes she looks absolutely amazing. Kind of ironic that she's featured in a song about Paranoid women, when she is on record as being... a paranoid woman. Oh irony, how comical.

To be honest I've lost count of how many Call of Duty games there have been. I remember buying Call of Duty 2 when I got my Xbox 360 in 2006. After that, I skipped Part 3 and fell in love with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Since I skipped World at War, I guess I'll pick up Modern Warfare 2. Lets see how the trailer looks:

Classic Albums-- Mike Jones???

When you think about the cannon of classic rap albums, there are certain entries which are pretty much no brainers. Albums like Illmatic, Stillmatic, Blueprint, The Chronic, Bacdafucup and Aquemni are pretty much on most peoples list, because they broke ground; presenting us as listeners with a new way to listen to and enjoy hip-hop.

The canonization of hip-hop albums, unfortunately, turns many fans and critics into fraudulent cultural gatekeepers: controlling what is consider classic, and what is disregarded and lost in the annuls of history. Many albums that actually push boundaries and explore new and innovative musical, for whatever reason, have been dismissed and mostly lost in time. Due to this canonization, and to the fact that saying your cell phone number over and over again is just plain silly, Mike Jones' debut album Who is Mike Jones is considered just another gimmicky rap album. I disagree with this popular contention, and would even go as far as to argue that while certainly not the greatest album of all time, Who is Mike Jones is a classic hip hop album.

A classic album sets trends; its lets its contemporaries know: this is the way you are going to do things from now on. In many ways Who is Mike Jones did just that. Jones' in-your-face marketing ploy of screaming his phone number served as a precursor to the current era of viral-marketing (a la YouTube, Twitter and Blogging) that we are in today. The album's reliance on slowing down the beat and lyrics (known as screwing and chopping the track) literally slowed down music, across all genres. Everyone from Jay-Z, Beyonce and even Fergie dropped songs that were heavily rooted in Houston's syrupy slow sound. And the cameos on the album made overnight celebrities out of relative unknowns like Slim Thug, Paul Wall and Lil' Keke.

The first single "Still Tippin" (f/ Paul Wall and Slim Thug), showcased to the world what Houston had to offer to the music world. Subsequent singles 'Flossin' and 'Back Them' were a combination of simple production, and catchy radio ready hooks. Dig deeper than the singles and you would find engaging, if not shallow, album cuts like 'Turning Lane', 'What you know about...', and 'Got it Sewed Up'. Looking back, it was a pretty solid package.

I know you're pretty disgusted right now, you can't believe I just spent three paragraphs singing the praises of Mike Jones. I'll be the first to admit, the album is not perfect; lyrically, it left much to be desired. Despite Mike's somewhat non-sensical subject matter, the beats, the overall production value of the record, and its phenomenal screwed and chopped version, produced by the brilliant Michel Watts, were superb.

Mike Jones Who is Mike Jones is definitely a classic album because it added a slowed down knuckleball to hip-hop's every growing arsenal. Make sure you give it a listen if you've never heard it before, or bump it for old times sake.

Two men, a Boy and a Shawty

Funny, there's not one talented rapper in this picture... but each of these fellas is interesting as hell, which makes them pretty relevant in music today. The success of these four artists shows that in this day and age, mainstream success is not at all contingent on skills or ability, its based on selling an image and marketing yourself well.

I don't wanna sound like a angry 30 year old, bitching and moaning about how hip-hop is lost, for two reasons: first, if you read this blog, you know I'm a huge Gucci Mane fan (and a closet Soulja Boy fan); and two, i can't hate on XXL for picking up on the fact that these four are pretty much the biggest names in southern rap now that T.I. is going to jail, and lil Wayne is trying to be the next Steven Tyler.

Either way, check out the Hood to Hood issue of XXL, on newstands on June 2nd.
